Still Walking Festival
Sept 2018 - Sept 2019
As we come to the end of our ninth festival programme, the announcment of two walks exploring England's experimental music legacy, focussing on Spydeee Gasmantell and Genesis P-Orridge in Solihull, and Coil in London.
Hull City of Culture 2017 showcased an epic retrospective exhibition of COUM Transmissions; the taboo-busting performance collective that preceded the formation of Industrial music icons Throbbing Gristle. Unexpectedly, this story begins not in the communes and disused buildings of Hull in the 1970s but rather in the aspirational suburbs of 1960s Solihull. Close friends Genesis P-Orridge and Spydeee Gasmantell - together known as Worm - attended Solihull School there until 1968.
Another tangent from COUM's original nucleus was Coil, an electronic music band based around the core duo of Peter Christopherson and singer John Balance. Both members have since passed away but their presence and influence is still felt in music, with an ever increasing fan base and indeed a release schedule that seems even more prolific than was true in life.
