'Where do you find them?'

Having seen the exhibition, archive or book Don't Please Tell Anybody many have asked this question. The answer is easy: 'in the streets of Birmingham'. The next (harder to explain) question is often 'how do you find them?'

To answer that, Tatters demonstrates the techniques and shares the insider tips of the seasoned searcher of lost notes and other pavement ephemera. What is litter to many can also be a temporary document of a city's humour, spirit or states of mind. The iChoose culture newsletter put it like this:

'Darkly funny, oddly moving and deeply Birmingham: a city seen not through landmarks or skylines, but through the things people tried to throw away.'

This walk provides the answers and asks further questions on a 100 minute exploration of Birmingham's lesser-swept pavements and buddleia gardens. It is an close relative to the How To See series of recent years, walks which aimed to sharpen audiences' observation and interpretation skills in ordinary, non sight-seeing contexts.

The walk ends at Calthorpe Park, Balsall Heath, Birmingham B5 7PS
