Sights in Motion
Sat 26th July, 11am with Chris Tomlinson
Start: Birmingham Bike Foundry cycle shop, 1539 Pershore Road, Stirchley, B30 2JH
Birmingham Bike Foundry follow up their 2012 round up of the city’s former cycle factories with a cinema-themed trek starting from Stirchley, moving through Kings Heath, Moseley and Balsall Heath, winding through Small Heath and East Birmingham before finishing approximately 3 hours later in the centre of town. The route includes 17 former cinemas which have variously been re-made, remodelled, regenerated or ruined and the unusual route allows a great opportunity for some genuinely new discoveries. The route presents a rapid-fire presentation of the buildings, focussing on their atmospheres, and on the details not discernible in photographs, rather than a presentation of historical data, final screenings or seating plans.
About Chris Tomlinson
Chris is a bike mechanic, trainer and director of Birmingham Bike Foundry worker co-operative. He enjoys cycling, cinema and history and likes to find different ways of engaging with the city.
- It is essential that participants' bicycles are roadworthy. We will be safety checking bikes at the start of the ride and any bikes not found to be roadworthy will not be able to take part in the event. The ride will be at a leisurely pace, but participants should be comfortable cycling for an afternoon and wear appropriate clothing.
- This tour is suitable for confident cyclists who are experienced and comfortable cycling on roads. We have designed the tour to take minor roads as much as possible, but due to the nature of the city, at times we have to ride on larger and busier routes, roundabouts &c.
- Children who are used to road riding are welcome, although younger children may find the duration of the ride challenging. We recommend this event for children over 12.
- Please bring a bike lock.
